External Access Lift via Scaffold Tower for Laboratory Equipment Installation

We were appointed to deliver and install multiple large pieces of laboratory equipment into a facility where internal access routes were not suitable. The only viable solution was to bring the equipment in through a first-floor laboratory window.

he Challenge

This project presented several complex challenges:

  • No suitable internal access: Doorways and corridors were too restricted for the size and weight of the equipment
  • Height access required: Equipment needed to be delivered to an upper-level laboratory
  • Heavy and sensitive loads: Required careful handling to prevent damage or misalignment
  • Urban London location: Limited external working space and strict safety considerations

Our Solution: Scaffold Tower & Forklift Lift-In

To overcome these challenges, we designed a safe external lifting operation using a scaffold tower and forklift system, allowing controlled access directly through the lab window.

Key Elements of the Solution

  • Scaffold Tower Installation
    • Built a fully compliant scaffold tower to the height of the lab window
    • Provided a stable working platform for guiding equipment safely into position
    • Included edge protection and safe access for operatives
  • Forklift Lifting Operation
    • Used a suitably rated forklift to lift equipment to the required height
    • Loads secured and balanced to maintain stability during lifting
    • Coordinated lift under strict supervision
  • Window Access Preparation
    • Window opening prepared and protected
    • Internal and external surfaces covered to prevent damage

Execution

  1. Pre-Planning & Site Setup
    • Detailed site survey and lift plan created
    • Risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) completed
    • Delivery coordinated to minimise disruption
  2. Scaffold Construction
    • Tower erected and inspected prior to use
    • Checked for stability, safe loading, and access
  3. Lifting Operation
    • Equipment lifted externally via forklift to scaffold platform level
    • Operatives positioned on scaffold to guide and stabilise loads
  4. Equipment Transfer
    • Units carefully moved through the window opening
    • No sudden movements, maintaining full control throughout
  5. Internal Positioning & Installation
    • Equipment unpacked within the lab
    • Positioned accurately using specialist handling equipment
    • Final placement completed to client specification

Outcome

  • All equipment safely delivered and installed with zero damage
  • Efficient solution implemented despite restricted building access
  • Full compliance with safety and lifting regulations
  • Project completed on schedule

Key Success Factors

  • Innovative external access solution using scaffold and lifting equipment
  • Detailed lift planning and coordination
  • Experienced team managing both height work and equipment handling
  • Strong focus on safety and precision throughout

Conclusion

This project demonstrates our ability to deliver creative access solutions for complex equipment installations, particularly in restricted or urban environments. By combining scaffold systems with controlled lifting techniques, we ensured safe, efficient delivery directly into the operational space.
